This was written about R.E.M. last year or so, when they announced retirement.
R.E.M. as a musical act have
always been open hearted and forward sounding, even when by their own
admissions, they really had no idea what they were doing. That has been
part of the appeal of the band; that any of us music nerds who just
happen to be from the South, who didn't quite fit in on the football
field or the baseball diamond back in high school could have our "own
thing."
R.E.M was and is still the heartbeat of a state of mind that says "Don't believe everything you read, or hear, because your parents thought it was so."--"Do your own research, ask your own questions and then when you've heard both sides of a thing, make up your own mind."
They also deserve respect in that when they finally did see worldwide fame, they handled it with as much grace as most anyone could when it comes to selling out or changing just to be more popular.
All R.E.M. fans can honestly say; R.E.M. never forgot where they came from.
R.E.M is for the KIDS-- (even though the radio here in the South still won't play them.)
R.E.M. never sold out.
